The honest guide
How to actually rank on Google Maps "near me" searches in India.
If you've already set up your Google Business Profile and you're not showing up for "salon near me" or "clinic near me", this guide explains exactly what's going on and what you need to do. No fluff, no overnight-rank promises — just the three factors Google uses, the timeline you should actually expect, and a checklist you can work through over the next six months.
How Google Maps ranking works
Google publishes its three ranking factors openly. Every other "secret" you've read about SEO collapses into one of these.
Relevance
How closely does your business match what the searcher typed? Driven by your primary GBP category (this single field matters more than your business name), your services list, your reviews mentioning the service, and your description.
Distance
How close is your verified address to where the searcher is standing? Nothing you can do here — except making sure your address is precise (not just the locality), and that you've defined a service area if you serve customers at their location.
Prominence
How well-known is your business across the web? Review count + rating, GBP post freshness, your hours being accurate, photos, and the consistency of your name + address + phone (NAP) on other directories. This is the part most owners ignore — and where 80% of the ranking lever actually lives.
The 6-month timeline
Anyone telling you "rank in week 1" is selling you something. Here is what actually happens to a brand-new GBP, assuming you're doing the right things.
Month 1
Setup + verification
Verify the listing (postcard / video / instant). Populate every field — primary category, description, services, hours, photos. Get your first 5 reviews from real customers you already know.
Month 2
First posts, first momentum
Post weekly on GBP (offers / updates / events). Get to 15+ reviews. Start appearing in low-competition queries — your business name plus city, neighbourhood-specific searches.
Month 3
First near-me appearances
30+ reviews, 4.3+ rating, posts every Monday. You start showing up for moderately-competitive queries like "chemist <area>". Top-3 only on very-specific or low-density queries.
Month 6
Stable presence
50–100+ reviews. You're now a real competitor for "<category> near me" in your immediate area. From here on, the work is maintenance — keep posting, keep responding, keep asking for reviews.
The 5 inputs you actually control
GBP completeness
Every field filled in. Primary category set correctly (Beauty Salon, not Hairdresser, not Spa — pick the exact Google taxonomy term). Description that uses the words customers search for. Services + prices. Photos including exterior, interior, products/work, team. Hours that match reality, including holiday updates.
Primary category exactness
If you sell both hair and beauty services, your primary should be the one customers search for more. Add the others as secondary. Wrong primary category is the single most common reason new businesses don't appear in near-me — it's the field Google uses first to filter who's even a candidate for the query.
Review velocity + rating
More important than total review count. Five new reviews per month signals 'active business' to Google. A WhatsApp template asking for a review at the right moment (right after the customer visit, while they're still happy) gets ~3x the conversion of asking later by email.
Posting frequency
GBP Posts (offers, updates, events) every 7 days. They expire after a week, so a stale post visibly hurts you. The content can be simple: 'This week's discount on...', 'Open Sunday this week', 'New service launched'. Consistency matters more than quality.
Citation consistency (NAP)
Your Name, Address, and Phone — exactly the same — on Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMart, Facebook, Bing Places. Google reads each citation as a vote that you're a real business. A typo in one ('Pvt Ltd' on Google but 'Private Limited' on Justdial) counts as zero. Sub-30-min setup per directory.
What ViziGrow does for you
Of the 5 inputs above, here's what we automate or templatize:
- GBP completeness: AI generates your description, services, FAQs, hours, and primary category recommendation. You copy into Google.
- Primary category: Our category picker maps your informal description ("salon") to the exact Google taxonomy term ("Beauty Salon") so you don't pick wrong.
- Review responses: Drafted replies for every review, in your tone. One-tap copy.
- Visibility scoreboard: Tracks which of the 5 inputs you've done and where you're losing points.
- Landing page: A vizigrow.com page acts as a web-side citation for Google + a place to send customers without a real website.
What we don't automate today: getting new reviews (we draft, you ask), submitting to directories (we'll surface deep links and copy-able content; you do the 30-min signups), and GBP posting (we're shipping a weekly post engine next month).
What you need to do
- Verify your Google Business Profile (postcard / video — whichever Google offers you).
- Within 30 days: get 5 reviews from real customers you already know.
- Every week: ask 2 customers for a Google review via WhatsApp. The link is in your /app/reviews page.
- Every Monday: post on Google Business Profile. Even a 1-line offer counts.
- Within 30 days: list on Justdial + Sulekha + IndiaMart + Bing Places + Facebook (use the directory checklist below).
- Every review: reply within 48 hours, using the drafted reply from /app/reviews.
- Quarterly: update your photos. Phone-quality is fine; freshness beats production.
